This week we have been using the mysterious pictures of Harris Burdick to inspire our narrative writing. We have each chosen one of his pictures to write a mystery story about. You can see these images at www.themysteriesofharrisburdick.com. We are currently all at the drafting stage of the writing process, but we hope to publish our stories towards the end of the week.

Star of the Week
Congratulations to Rula and Adam, who both received Star of the Week certificates in Assembly this week.
Rula received her certificate for putting 100% effort into everything she does, and always with a smile.
Adam received his certificate for writing a fantastic narrative story. You can find a copy of his story in a prior blog.
Ordering Decimals
We have been learning to order decimals in our Math
lessons. We had a competition where we were put into two groups. We each had a
decimal number written on a piece of paper and then without any talking we had
to order ourselves from the smallest decimal number to the largest. The winning group was the one who could do it
in the quickest time. Mrs Michelle then
challenged the class to order themselves from the largest decimal number to the
smallest in less than 30 seconds, again without talking. We tried a couple of times but the quickest
we could do it in was 45 seconds.
Bronze Band
Have you got what it takes to join Mr. Bob's Bronze Band? Try watching this short video to find out more about some of the instruments you can learn in the instrumental tuition programme at KICS.
Story Settings
Y6 explored KICS for different story settings. We went to the garden, the senior library and visited the tortoises for inspiration. We used our senses to help describe different locations.
'I can touch the big leaves.' Abu'
'I could hear the trees eternal whisper'. Adam
'I can touch the smooth petals of the flowers.' Sindhu
'I can hear the birds.' Hania
'I see lots of red plants.' Kareem
'I see the rough tortoise shell.' Mazin
Swimming
The KICS swimming programme is now in full swing. All the
students in the Infants and Juniors are making serious waves and gaining in
confidence at the same time. It’s good to see so many of our new swimmers being
risk takers and committing themselves to improving in the pool as they work
towards the primary swim-athon (Weds, Sept 25th) and early years fun
splash (Thurs, Sept 26th).
Thanks,
Mr.
Isaac, Mr. Andy and Mr. Yousif

Narrative Writing
Year 6 have been drafting, editing and publishing stories. We used the same sentence starter to begin our stories. The objective was to try and 'hook' the reader in the first paragraph. How do you think we did?

Music
In Year 6 Music, students
have been working on a percussion ensemble. Students have learned and practiced
parts for the cowbells, agogo bells, shakers, and tubano drums. Playing
together is a challenge, requiring careful listening to make sure the parts fit
together well. As the Year 6 students have learned each part of the ensemble, I’ve
challenged them to play it with a variety of different music. Each time,
students first have to find the steady beat, played in the ensemble by the
cowbells, and then add in the other parts, one by one. In the first clip here,
students are playing along to a song called Mashena, a Sudanese song by the
group Al Bilabil, as performed by Addis Acoustic Project. In the second clip,
students are just playing the ensemble without accompanying music.

Frogs
Frogs are everywhere in the primary school this week!
Some optional homework for Y6 students: find out some interesting facts about frogs. We are trying to learn about our amphibious visitors so that we can care for them. We are planning to become the 'Frog specialists' so that we can educate the younger students.
