Please Help Nepal

Today I shared a video with the Year 6 students about the massive earthquake (7.8) that struck on 25th April 2015 in Barpak, Nepal which caused a significant amount of deaths and casualties.  Yesterday there was another big earthquake (7.3) near Kathmandu.

Me and my family are asking you, the community to help these people by donating goods and or money.

Please view the video to learn about what my old school, TBS, Kathmandu are doing to help out, and what you can do.

Thank you for watching and caring about these wonderful people.

Saying Farewell To Our Wonderful Teaching Assistant

Sunday was Mrs. Olena's final day at KICS before she flew back to the Ukraine to put her feet up and relax whilst awaiting for the arrival of her baby boy.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Olena for everything that she has done for the Year 6 team, and for the Primary School.  Her commitment, enthusiasm, caring nature, outstanding organisation and the ability to see things that need to be done before others, is remarkable.

We wish Mrs. Olena and her family all the best for the arrival of their son and brother, and for whatever the future holds.

Student-Led Conferences - 6A

The Student Led Conference (SLC) within any PYP school is a major event on the calendar and today's at KICS was no different.

The SLC is an opportunity for the student to accept personal responsibility for reporting their academic and social progress to their parents.  It provides them with an chance to discuss their goals, share their learning over time through the use of their digital portfolios and celebrate their achievements in a constructive and supportive environment.
“Student-led conferences involve the student and the parents. The students are responsible for leading the conference, and also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents… The conference involves the student discussing and reflecting upon samples of work that they have previously chosen to share with their parents. These samples have been previously selected with guidance and support from the teacher, and could be from the student’s portfolio.”
- Making the PYP happen: A curriculum framework for international primary education, 2009, pg 52.
As the class teacher, it was wonderful to sit back and listen to the conversations going on between the student and parent(s).  For most students, this task of taking control and leading the process was familiar so they were comfortable and confident in this role.  Having done some role play the previous day certainly helped alleviate fears and put those new to this conference format at ease.

Here are some tweets from the event.

Do you want a sneak preview into what science will look for you in Year 7?  Well, this weekend is your perfect opportunity.  Calling all budding scientists who are interested in learning more about the practical side of Secondary Science.

This Saturday, students from Years 7 - 9 will be showcasing their scientific projects to the KICS community.

The students have been asked to create a project that is more than simply "magic".  They are required to plan their method, including presenting relevant data and summary presentation material, with lots of actual demonstrations too.  Some students explored and created independently while other choose to collaborate on a project of their choice.

So if this sound like something that you are interested in, head along to KICS this Saturday 28th February from 5:00 - 7:00 pm to be amazed by the wide array of projects.

We hope to see you there!

A Look Back At Last Week

Mathematics

In mathematics the students have just finished exploring positive and negative integers, addition and subtraction of decimal numbers, ratio and proportion . Next we turn our attention towards securing mental methods for all fours options and solving complex multiplication and division problems.  Through the use of multi-steps word problems we aim to tackle how we can filter through the language to decode these problems, and in turn, identify what is required before completing the calculations.

The recent Khan Academy app update has been excellent as now we can view video tutorials, obtain hints and complete activities all in the one place.  Previously, we could only view videos.  A big thanks to the team at Khan Academy for this free service and awesome update.

Just a few calculations.

Language

In Language we have finished our journalistic writing focus on tabloids and broadsheets and it was fun using the same news to compare and contrast these types of writing.

We are now looking at narrative writing and using the Story Mountain planner to help us organise our stories.  This ties in nicely with the Tayeb Salih Junior Short Story Competition and our visiting author Sam Osman who will no doubt be able to provide us with some excellent advice and tips.  Because we live in a connected world, we plan to tweet authors to find out their top tips.

We have just finished the latest reading assessments in the form of running records and it has been pleasing to reflect upon the progress made since the start of the year.  We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support in this area and modelling the importance of reading at home.
Try me out!

UOI

Last week our Mighty Media unit concluded with our assembly in which some of the students shared their audio or video promotion of their print advertisements.  By embedding a QR code into their poster the students made an interactive advertisement that engage the consumer.  Next we hope to "WOW" people with the use of the Aurasma app to create augmented reality.  Hopefully we will be able to find a work around for our current issue.

Exhibition

We have started the tuning in stage of the Exhibition and the students have been working independently and collaboratively to explore local and/or global issues/problems that warrant a significant investigation.   In thinking about possible issues/problems the students have been encouraged to answer the following questions:
  • What is the big idea?
  • Why is this issue/problem important?
  • Who is this going to benefit?
  • How are you going to solve this issue/problem? (Action)
This year's Exhibition falls under the transdisciplinary theme of Sharing The Planet which involves are specific inquiry into:

  • Rights and responsibilities.
  • The struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things.
  • Communities and the relationships within and between them.
  • Access to equal opportunities.
  • Peace and conflict resolution.
We look forward to meeting with parents in the Junior Hall on Monday 9th February from 08:15 - 09:45 to explore this in greater depth.

KICS Primary Athletics Day

Once again this was an excellent event as it not only provided an opportunity for the students to text themselves physical but it also provided them with the opportunity for leadership.  During the morning the students were involved in running events alongside teachers for the Year 1 to 3 athletics events.

Year 6 Curriclum Update

Update - Semester 2, Week 1

Language

Reading - We are currently in our guided reading groups exploring both fiction and non-fiction text.  One of the key focus points is on using information from the text to provide informed responses which in turn, demonstrate a sound understanding of what is being read.  Students continue to complete activities via Edmodo which is available to them outside the classroom.  Over the next week the student will be completed Reading test which will allow us to regroup and monitor reading progress.

Oral - Through discussion we are focusing on asking and answering question to introduce new ideas and further develop the depth of discussion.  Being able to stay focused is an important component of this.

Writing - We have just finished integrating our Mighty Media unit to create a variety of advertisements which use the persuasive tools and figurative language to promote a product.  Presently we are using our ODE experience to emphasis the styles and conventions of journalism to write either a tabloid article or broadsheet article.

Our next genre focus explores narrative writing, in particular, the development of plot, characters and the structure used to write an extended story.  Throughout the planning and drafting process the students will focusing on fluidity between paragraphs.  The student will be building on previous language skills and use of devices to help portray imagery for the reading.

Alongside our writing we will investigate meanings and spellings of connectives as well as how to use more sophisticated forms of punctuation.

Mathematics
We are investigating number. Some of the learning outcomes include:
  • difference between negative and positive numbers, and negative and negative numbers.
  • ordering and comparing negative and positive numbers.
  • adding and subtracting decimals
  • solving problems involving ratio and proportion which will allow us to reinvestigate concepts explored during our fractions, decimals and percentage unit.
  • exploring multiplication and division strategies for mental calculations.  For example; multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10.
  • multiplying and dividing two or three digit numbers by a single digit or two a digit number.
Students will be completing a pre test to uncover their prior knowledge and then placed in differentiated groups with specific activities and enrichment material to provide “hands on” opportunities to apply their knowledge.  The students are expected to explore and complete the relevant section(s) of Mathletics and/or Khan Academy that corresponds to what is being covered in class.

Unit of Inquiry (UOI)
The students are currently completing their Mighty Media project where they looked at persuasive language, advertising techniques and target audiences.  For this project their task was to design and create a print ad and a radio ad promoting the KICS Junior Arabic Evening.

Next we will explore the transdisciplinary theme of How The World Works with our unit Energy For Life.

Central Idea

Energy exists in many forms and is changed, stored and used in different ways.

Lines of Inquiry
  • Forms and sources of energy.
  • Storage and transformation of energy.
  • Conservations of energy.
  • Renewable and sustainable energy.
If you are particularly knowledgeable or experienced in this area it would be wonderful to hear from you.  Maybe you could visit us or we could visit you.

Week 15 - Part 2: Ohhhh, Deeeee, Eeeehhhh!

A big feature of Week 15 was our ODE trip to Escape. Here is a brief recount by me, Mr Donovan, of what we got up to.

Prior to boarding the bus the students had a quick lesson from Mr Adrian on organising their packs in preparation for the walk into Escape.

Once the buses arrived at the destination we all jumped out, had some photos taken and started our hike.  For some students, this was a first and they certainly appreciated the advice from Mr Adrian as walking with a balance pack was certainly easier.  During this short trek it was great to see the students supporting those who were having difficulty due to the size of their packs in comparison to them! The sight of the lake was very much welcomed by all as this meant that we had finally arrived and could now get rid of the weight!
Pre Trek Energy!

After some well deserved food and a quick safety briefing the students, (in their groups) went about putting their tents up.  Some had clearly done this before, and for some, this was a first.  Next the students were organised into three large groups for the three afternoon activities.  Within each group, students had a partner for the activities.

Cooperation

Fishing
Well done to Lalaine who was the only person to catch a fish.  Also, a special mention goes to Iba for being a risk taker and touching the fish.  All was going well until Iba was slightly freaked out by the feel and somehow dropped the fish which returned it back to the lake.  No doubt the fish was happy with the outcome.
Perseverance

Sandcastle building
I was impressed with the creativity and team work during this activity.  The students included various water features with some of the structures certainly resembled buildings that I have seen in Dubai.  Looking back at what was created, it seems that we have a number of budding architects.
Creativity

Art project
For this activity the students had to use items from the environment to create an artwork.  Most groups decided to create sand drawing and, while others tried to create 3D sculptures.
Some of the creations included:
  • A self portrait, both small and large.
  • A mini 3D replica of the volleyball court
  • A landscape sand drawing titled, 'Sunshine Over Mountain."
  • Symbols & signs such as the peace sign.
The overall winners in what was a very closely contested series of events were Yusei and Lalaine.  For their reward, the received some delicious biscuits, honey and marshmallows for dessert.

After some free time, the students prepared themselves for the Cook Off competition.  There was a range of meals from the reheating noodles, to scrambled eggs and cheese in croissants, to the most popular meal, being pasta and tomato sauce.  The team that one the competition responded positively to feedback given by me, the judge, and add some spices in the mixes to bring out the flavours.  Congratulations to Andrew, Azziz and Ibrahim for their success and also well done to all of the students for successfully managing their evening meal time.  Finally the Cook Off clean-up was over and we were soon around an open fire roasting marshmallows and reflecting upon an eventful day.
Reflection
Next the students brushed their teeth and headed to bed.  Some slept well and some did not!  Infact, I remember waking up during the night to the vision of a silhouette outside of my tent which was quite alarming.

Morning breakfast saw some more creative meals with a mixture of fruits, museli, cereal and even pancakes courtesy of the ready-made mix.

Once again, after every meal time comes with the chore of cleaning up and it seemed that the Pancake Mix whilst rather delicious, was also pretty sticky and proved troublesome when cleaning.  Due to either lack of sleep, or that fact that the students did not want to leave, or maybe both, the packing up of tents and packs was pretty laborious!  As a result our trek back out of camp started a bit later than expected.  Eventually some tired students followed Mr Getnet on the hike out, and understandable, this was a bit slower than the previous day.  Kindly, Mr Adrian gave us all a reprieve by asking the drivers to come and pick us up so we did not have to walk as far.

After a very quiet journey back to school the students then returned all of their equipment and then found the energy to eat.  I believe that the students slept rather well that night!  A big thank you to Mr Chris, our medic, Mrs Olena for her support throughout, and to Mr Getnet and Mr Adrian for all of their organisation in making this experience possible.

The students had a memorable time and the events and experiences from ODE continue to be the topic of conversation today.

Week 15 - Part 1: Inside The Classroom

As all of you are aware last week the ODE was big feature of Week 15 and no doubt your child slept well on Thursday evening.  Here is a brief outline of what the students were doing whilst at school with an ODE special post to follow once photos have been compiled.

Mathematics

Iba and Lalaine working on Mathletics.
As well as activities within the classroom, we have be using Mathletics and Khan Academy to explore fractions, decimals and percentage.

Our focus last week was:
  • Fractions and decimals on a number line.
  • Simplifying fractions to the lowest form.
  • Comparing fraction with the same denominator and related denominators.
  • Recognizing equivalents between fractions, decimals and percent.
  • A look back at converting units.
The tweet below featured Nanami who created a tutorial on Explain Everything and shared it with her class to teach them one of the above concepts.

Language

The students have been continuing to work on their non-chronological eBooks.   The majority of the students are now in the final stages of the writing phase which focuses on editing and revisiting writing based on peer and teacher feedback.  Alongside this we have been exploring text features of our eBook which includes:

  • Cover
  • Title of contents
  • Subtitles
  • Glossary
  • Images and captions
  • Use of audio
  • Font type, size and colour
  • Hyperlink images used (as an alternative to bibliography)
Once the eBooks are completed the students will export this in video format so that it can be shared by using either a QR code or Aurasma.

UOI

In small groups the students have been working on their radio promotions advertisements for the upcoming Arabic Evening.

Using their iPads the students were asked to create an audio script detailing what was to be spoken and how.

Task requirements:
  • The radio advert needs to be at least 30 seconds in duration.
  • Be in two languages.
  • Have at least one sound effect.
  • Use music either throughout advertisement or to open and close.
  • Answer the what, why, where, when and who questions.
  • Engage the audience through use of voice and interactions between speakers.
Roving around the groups as they worked on this mini project it was clear to see them fully engaged and intrinsically motivated to create a successful promotional radio advertisement.
