In Year 6 Music, students
have been working on a percussion ensemble. Students have learned and practiced
parts for the cowbells, agogo bells, shakers, and tubano drums. Playing
together is a challenge, requiring careful listening to make sure the parts fit
together well. As the Year 6 students have learned each part of the ensemble, I’ve
challenged them to play it with a variety of different music. Each time,
students first have to find the steady beat, played in the ensemble by the
cowbells, and then add in the other parts, one by one. In the first clip here,
students are playing along to a song called Mashena, a Sudanese song by the
group Al Bilabil, as performed by Addis Acoustic Project. In the second clip,
students are just playing the ensemble without accompanying music.
