Swimming

Dear Parents,

After the March break all students in Reception to Year 6 will begin swimming for PE.

Could you please send your child with a towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, flip flops and googles (if they wear them) on their PE days.

Swimming is an integral part of our PE programme at KICS and we teachers are looking forward to the students improving upon the work that they did in semester one.

I hope you all enjoy a restful but active March break!

Thanks as always for your support,

Mr Andy and Mr Branden

Week 14
Nov.23- Nov.27
ODE
All the students are extremely excited about the upcoming camp! Mr. Adrian visited the classes to discuss the tent and cooking groups. Camp activities, supply lists and options for healthy meals were reviewed. This is going to be an exciting adventure!

MATH: PAV and FDP
Students completed activities designed to enrich their understanding of perimeter, area and volume. Rooms, furniture, doors, windows and rugs were measured-calculations made. A post –test was given to measure progress.
Our new unit in math is working with the following learning outcomes regarding fractions, decimals and percentages:
·      Count on/back in fractions and decimals
·      Compare fractions with the same denominator
·      Order mixed numbers
·      Change improper fraction to a mixed number
·      Reduce fractions to their simplest form
·      Convert fractions to decimal fractions
·      Understand percentage as parts in every 100 and express basic fractions as percentages
·      Find simple percentages of shapes and whole numbers
Mr. Donovan has created a Mathletics unit exploring these concepts; when used in conjunction with the Khan Academy these extra tutorials will hopefully ensure understanding.
UNIT OF INQUIRY: THE MIGHTY MEDIA
The Transdisciplinary Theme is “How we express ourselves”. We began the unit by reviewing figurative language and its relevance to advertising. There will be three tasks to be completed that are related to the learning outcomes {explaining how advertising techniques work and how to suit ads to specific audiences}.
Students will use their I Pads to create Radio Ads promoting the upcoming Arabic Evening and Print Ads reminding the community of the importance of Digital Citizenship.
WRITING: JOURNALISM
The emphasis in writing will be on using the styles and conventions of journalism to write a report on events. In this case, the event will be our ODE adventure. Students will explore tabloid and broadsheet journalistic styles and choose one to create a front page based on our experiences. It will be interesting to compare the reflections.
READING: SMALL GROUP
Students will continue to practice reading with accuracy, fluency and expression. They will practice varying vocabulary, expression and tone of voice to engage the listener- buddy reading with Year 1 has been great practice for this! Summarizing a passage or chapter in a given number of words will be continued.
Homework: Mathletics , Spelling City, Reading log

The Non- Chronological Report with accompanying graphics should be completed on Book Creator and ready to share with the class by Tuesday.

There’s always someone standing on their own outside the crowd who looks bewildered and confused.

They try to make some sense of all the jostling and the jokes but still they don’t look that amused.

What place, what life, what did they leave behind?

What sights, what sounds, what thoughts are on their mind?

I’ve noticed that your accent has an unfamiliar sound; sometimes it seems you hate us all.

In silence you retreat into a closed and private world behind your own protective wall.

What crimes, what hurt, what wars have you survived?

What hopes, what dreams were left when you arrived?

(Chorus) Who’ll be your refuge, your shelter, your fortress?

Who’ll be your champion?

Who’ll be your refuge, your pilot, your brother, your northern star?

Who will be your second sight; the light that guides your way at night?

Don’t be down-hearted. I’ll be your refuge, I’ll be your refuge.

There’s nothing wrong with being shy and ev’rybody knows that fools speak louder than the rest.

(echo)…that fools speak louder than the rest.

Let no-one tell you how to think or what is right and true; you are not weak or second best.

(echo)…you are not weak or second best.

What crimes, what hurt, what wars have you survived?

What hopes, what dreams were left when you arrived?

(echo) What crimes, what hurt, what wars have you survived?

What hopes, what dreams

(canon) Were left when you arrived?

(Chorus) I’ll be your refuge, your shelter, your fortress, I’ll be your champion.

I’ll be your refuge, your pilot, your brother, your northern star.

I will be your second sight; the light that guides your way at night.

Don’t be down-hearted.

(start) I’ll be your refuge, I’ll be your refuge  (x2)

I’ll be your refuge

(echo) I’ll be your refuge, I’ll be your refuge (x2)

Refuge.

Year 6 Blog-Week of Sunday, August 31- Thursday, September 4
I would to thank all those parents who came to “Meet the Teacher” night last week. It was a pleasure getting to know you.
This week in Year 6 we finished the introduction to our first Unit of Inquiry-Healthy Mind and Healthy Body.

Students created posters with their personal goals to achieve healthy bodies and minds and thus a fantastic school year!

In addition, we wrote a variety of poems {I Am, Diamante, Concrete, Acrostic} on the same theme that were inserted into our Poetry Anthology book.

Students also gave an oral presentation on family and cultural traditions. They chose a visual aid such as: a power point, poster or costume and talked to the class for a minute or so.

Our next Unit of Inquiry is Children’s Rights. We began with lessons on Child Protection with Mrs. Natasha.

We hope to use the iPads to create some wonderful projects incorporating this new and exciting technology.

Your child will also be given a Mathletics user name and password that will be glued into their planner .Speaking of which… please check and sign the planner each day for the next week or so. It is a very simple but effective form of communication.

Regards,

MR.RICK

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM YEAR 6 TEAM
Hello and welcome to the Year 6 Blog. My name is Mr. Rick and I’ll be teaching both the 6A and 6B sections until Mr. Donovan returns from paternity leave. Thus far I am very impressed with the eagerness to learn and the kind nature of all the Year 6 students.
This week we engaged in a variety of creative team building activities to help us prepare for the school year.
Students were challenged by table to create the tallest structure possible using 3 marshmallows, 3 pieces of spaghetti and 1 piece of tape. Afterwards, they predicated what would happen if they doubled the ingredients before attempting construction. This Thursday there is a 6A vs.6B challenge using packages of marshmallows and spaghetti as well as a role of tape to construct the tallest and most “aesthetically” pleasing structure possible. Mr. Brian, Miss Olena and myself will be the judges.
In Math we reviewed the number system: place value, ordering, comparing and rounding numbers. We also gave a “Mad Minute” math test on math computation facts. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone how important it is that they can recall these facts as easily as they recall their name!
We have also begun our first unit of inquiry: Healthy Mind / Healthy Body. More information will appear on this next week.
We are all looking forward to meeting you on August 28th!

Reading in Year 6

"The more that you read, the more things you will know.  The more you learn, the more places you'll go."  Dr Suess

In year 6 we are passionate about reading and strongly believe we should spend time reading every day.  We do this through a mixture of 'reading to', 'reading with', and 'reading by'.

'Reading To"
This term our class story has been "Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone".  For some of us it has been our first time entering the magical world of Harry Potter and for others we are revisiting for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th times.  Some of us have even read it in 3 different languages.  It has been a popular choice and the students eagerly await the class story each day.

"A book is a gift you can open again and again."  Garrison Keillor

"Reading With"
3-4 times a week we read in our reading groups.  In these groups we practice reading aloud, with fluency and expression.  We also discuss our predictions, ask questions, clarify and summarise.

"Reading By"
Every day we have time for R.F.F. (reading for fun).  We aim to read a wide range of genres in year 6 so each student has a genre wheel.  On the genre wheel the students are able to mark off a section each time they read a novel.  Some of our students have made a great start this term and have already read novels from 5 different genres.

"Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body."  Richard Steele

"Reading at Home"
We strongly encourage reading at home.  Parents, remember you are your child's greatest role model.  Make time to read together as a family. Demonstrating  your own love of reading is one of the most powerful things you can to do to foster a love of reading in your child.

"So please. oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your T.V. set away, and in it's place you can install, a lovely bookshelf on the wall."    Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Daily Facts

All Y6 students complete 100 maths facts in 5 minutes every day. Students enjoy tracking their progress. We record the consecutive days that students achieve 100%. Congratulations to Abu who has achieved 10 consecutive days of 100%. That's 1,000 maths facts with no errors. Well done Abu!
